Hug a sound artist today!
Today is most of all “World kindness day”, but also global “Hug a musician day”.
Let us extend this to “Hug a sound artist day”.
When the technology for audio recording was invented in the late 1870s, it changed the way that music was able to be presented to the world. Thomas Edison invented the phonograph that could play back anything that it “heard” so that sound could be recorded and then reproduced. It also brought to us the whole world made of millions of sounds.
It may have been an 8 year old boy that recorded the first nature sound, a bird in his garden, in the 1880ies. His name was Ludwig Koch, and he ended up one of the great pioneers of sound art, recording in the early 1930ies soundscapes of cities in Germany and all birds of the Royal Garden of Brussels, published in so-called mass spread sound books - sets of 78 rpm disks with photographs, or the first multimedia works.
Sound art not only opened up our way of listening, but also understanding the world, the latest development in bio-acoustics let us listen to how plants and trees communicate, or how whales communicate over thousands of kilometers, the latter becoming more and more rare sounds in the oceans unfortunately, but showing how sound art makes us more aware of the importance of our more than human planet.
One more reason to celebrate sound walk creators, bring together the best of the two worlds, sound arts and walking arts, the main ingredients on our menu at walk · listen · create. We are proud to announce the short list for the winners of the Sound Walk September Award 2022.
Winners and honourable mentions will be announced in an online ceremony at the start of 2023.
