Thursday was a special day

26 Feb, 2023

In the UK we write the calendar dates day / month / year which meant that on Thursday last week it was 23/02/2023 of which some were claiming that it was a palindrome - where the numbers can be read backwards or forwards - however, we have to wait 9 years before 23rd February offers that up.

Thursday also happened to be special day for me personally, as I published my first episode of my Talking Walking podcast on the 23rd February 2008 - well before podcasts had become as popular as they are now. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to interview so many people passionate about walking, and my enthusiasm hasn't waned, as last week, I interviewed Julius Smit on a walk along the promenade in Eastbourne, edited an interview with Clara Gari, I had recorded in Olot in Catalunya last summer, and next week can look forward to meeting Marion Childs, Head of Services at the Alzheimer's Society who is in charge of their walking challenges. Every week, I am doing something linked to the podcast, and all of it has been a delight.

This last week, we brought together the jury for the Marŝarto Award for walking art, inviting them to define the criteria by which they and our online jury will select the winner. It was fascinating to listen to each of them talk so passionately about walking art - this is going to be a fabulous award to be part of, so do please make every effort to submit walking pieces this year.

We have signed up Linda Cracknell for a Walking Writers Salon in early May, she too has been one of my interviewees, and is a terrific writer of landscape, with a collection of essays coming out from Saraband in the Spring. There's more on writing and walking too, with a book launch from the Centre of Urban Cultural Research at Goldsmiths, University of London early in March, and brought by popular demand, Joanna Wolfarth is leading an online workshop on creative ekphrastic writing for the Urban Tree Festival. Last but not least, we have a Walking Detective meet up on Monday evening - do come along and find out what we are researching or bring along your own topic to research - so lots to look forward to.

For now, keep walking!
