Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA

Walking piece details

Duration 60 minutes

For the last seven years, I go and spent 2 or 3 weeks in the Bonneville Salt Flats in Western Utah and work on large scale drawings that I take photos and video of with a drone. This video shows the process of creating one of the drawings.
This particular drawing is based on creating a system to measure the arch that path of the sun follows on the summer solstice. The first circle is create in scale to myself, roughly 6 feet in diameter. From there the circles and triangles double in size creating a repetitive template of scale. It took four days of labor to create the diagram, and the fifth day was used to follow the path of the sun.
The lines and circles are created by hammering a steak in the ground and tying a rope to it, and walking out to the distance. The largest circle is over four miles in circumference.
