3 Jul, 2023

Before the moment of meeting in Prespa. Monday July 3d the International Walking Arts Encounters in Prespa begins, but actually it has already begun. About 100 participants arrived on Saturday or Sunday, coming from all corners of the earth, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, the Caribbean, Mexico, US, Canada. And 100 more expected in the coming days.
The fact that Prespa is a place at borders gives it a feel of being in between. Even more it is a place that is hard to reach, remote, with few roads and no public transport. Literally a place that can not be reached.
Participating in the Walking Encounters in Prespa is more than going somewhere specific, it is being there even before arriving, it is about being together before actually being in a specific place.
Soazic Guezennec, told me that she and 10 other participants, many of them not knowing each other before, already made arrangements to travel together from Thessaloniki to Prespa, by the same busses and sharing taxis. And this group was not alone in this initiative. The encounters starts already before the encounters, and being in Prespa starts already when stepping out of your door, it is a continuous journey.
Not only the overwhelming landscape, but the spirit of Prespa makes this event unique, it is about walking together, what is happening in between, what relates the participants to each other and the place, giving space to what is not there yet, much more than about practices and research that are shared.
And so begins a week long Walking Arts Encounters, even before it begins. WLC is part of it with Andrew and myself being there, and bringing a taste of Prespa to you all in a walk listen cafe on Tuesday July 4th. Live from Prespa, we are joined by Greek artists Aimilia Siafarika and Iro Grigoriadi to dive into a conversation about “Walking Visions”, the topic of the Preoa Walking Encounters 2023. The artists will be joined in discussion with the coordinators, the artistic committee and participants of the Prespa Encounters.
