Please book for free through Eventbrite via the attached link.

Join artist and newsprint enthusiast Eloise Hawser for a series of four different workshops with guided walks in London’s Docklands, looking at the area’s rich variety of stories, people and places through the lens of local newspapers past and present.
Over a dozen local papers have served the Docklands area since the Victorian era. The four workshops-with-walks will focus on some of the best-known titles, and their complex relationships with local people, political groups, and businesses.
For each event, you and fellow attendees will meet at a key accessible location and use newspapers from Newham’s extraordinary archives to unfold stories steeped in the emotions, drama, politics and pathos of Docklands life through the decades. These news stories will then guide your walk with Eloise to significant local sites, giving you the chance to discover connections between past and present; between newsprint and local people’s lives.

‘Flights and Fights at London City Airport’
Saturday 23 October 2021
1.30 – 4.30
Meet at Royal Victoria Station, Docklands Light Railway
Walk ends at West Silvertown Station, Docklands Light Railway
World-leading cities need more than one airport, right? Revive the politics that made the building of City Airport consistently covered in local newspapers such as the East London Advertiser, the Airport’s own paper, Newham Recorder (since 1968) and Docklands News (1983 – 1992). Then join Eloise on a guided walk which takes in the Millennium Mills area and North Woolwich, raising the spectres of demolition and redevelopment, business flights and Balearic holidays.
