Historic England is working with the National Trust and Sound UK to launch a series of self-guided, immersive sound walks to help people discover the magic of their local high streets for Heritage Open Days. Artist Dan Fox’s sound walk explores the diversity of Barrow’s high street and how it has changed. Take a journey amongst landmarks of work and play on the high street including iconic shops, businesses and the clubs of Cornwallis Street. Listen to the stories of local people who have witnessed the street changing, like when Barrow’s high street had 12,000 ship workers descend on it at lunchtime. Hear more about local civic events like cycle races and the centenary of the town hall. Take a moment to slow down, pause and experience the high street in a new way. High Street Sound Walks are available via the Historic England website from 10 September: listen any time via your smartphone or other personal device. HistoricEngland.org.uk/SoundWalks
