We are excited to have Ellen Mueller as our guest for this Cafe. For the last few years, she has been compiling a comprehensive resource on walking art and sharing it through her blog and through her own teaching resources. However, she is now the author of recent book from SUNY Publishers that brings together her research. Do join us to discuss “Walking as Artistic Practice”, and her book with the similar title.

Walking as Artistic Practice (the book) is accessible to a wide range of readers who wish to expand their understanding of walking, from artists, to commuters, to nature lovers, and beyond. The book lays out foundational information about the history of walking and its development as an artistic practice. It also provides guidance on how to analyze and discuss walking artworks, with over 300 examples and over 75 exercises. The chapters offer a variety of topical approaches, allowing readers to craft an experience most suited to their interests and needs.

As a long distance thru-hiker and multidisciplinary visual artist invested in social engagement, I am very excited about what this book will bring to those interested in bringing walking as artistic practice and social engagement into their studio practice and classrooms. … This book will become even more relevant as we continue to navigate the pandemic looking for solace in connecting with ourselves and others, reimagining purpose for our lives, the ‘great resignation,’ navigating a global mental health crisis, relearning practical skills and traditions.
