Vents represent breath. breathing humans and buildings. But also pollution. Vents nudge towards the layers that go unseen as we walk, the “unsightly”, the things we try to hide, to forget. What happens if they are focused on and become the point of desire as one walks?

This project emerged from noticing how the vents take on new meaning, additional value, as I walked. The vents are both instruments and performers. Each with a different pitch and rhythm. The hum of the vents guide my feet, drawing me into crevices, back alleys, and outside bedroom windows.

As I walked I collected and brought the sounds and videos of the vents (and a few natural gas pipes) together to create a symphony of the city I live in, Montreal. An exposure of large scale, infastructural respiration often gone unnoticed. I wanted this humming orchestra to be organic. As if it was a live performance full of stops and starts and “mistakes”.

The idea emerged from a workshop series I was invited to attend with The Oxygen Art Center.
