In East and West, for centuries, painters, poets, dancers were walking in the landscape (natural and urban) and finding sources of reference or inspiration. Walking stories are carried in memory and remain existing for as long as there is a body to carry them. Walking is not characterized by one solid approach; it can be drifting, wandering, strolling, aimless, or purposeful. Each one of these practices suggests a body that remembers and they are introducing different approaches of storytelling.

Remote walking – walking with prompts

The pandemic challenged walking artists to engage with new forms and new media for their practice. Group walking was translated into online walking, allowing people around the globe to walk together. Prompts or "walking scores" facilitated pandemic walkers to explore within the limits of their walking spaces, often in surprising and new ways, individually or with other remote walkers. Online technologies permitted to listen into remote spaces, beyond physical reach in the pandemic.

Open call for WAC - Walking Arts Encounters/Conference Prespa (Greece), 3-10 July 2023. In the third walking arts encounter in Prespa we explore the various dimensions of “Walking Visions” with an encounter for sharing of artistic walks and walkshops, along with a conference about the topic. We invite artists, writers and other creative practitioners, critics and researchers to Prespa this summer and to take up the provocation of the encounters/conference theme.

Yannis Ziogas embarked on a 138-kilometer walking odyssey through Greek landscapes, chronicling the experience in "Crossing the Limits..." This journey led to self-exploration and the creation of a "Walking Tale," a poem of curiosities.
WALC – a new future of walking arts

Walking Arts & Local Communities (WALC) is an artistic cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union, establishing an International Center for Artistic Research and Practice of Walking Arts, backed up by an online counterpart in the format of a digital platform for walking arts. The project leans strongly on involving local inhabitants, and on engaging with local activists.

The book with all actions and papers of the Walking Arts Encounters/Conference (WAC) 2019 is now available in a printed and a digital format. The publication is in full color, with hundreds of photographs, hundreds of written contributions from all over the world, and 567 pages.
