GPS, geo-poetic system

Be the first to favourite this.

Geo-poetic system was a term coined by Lucy Frears during locative media art research (published 2017). The basis of geopoetics, a theory and practice developed by Scottish philosopher and poet Kenneth White, is to connect humans to the lines of the earth (White cited in McManus 2007: 183), or ‘what’s out there’ (Ingold 1993; 154; White 2005: 200; White 2006: 9). The contact White describes is often between the human mind and the earth, what he calls ‘landscape-mindscape’ (Legendre 2011: 121). Because of the embodied nature of locative media experiences using a smartphone in landscape for these walking art experiences using gps technologies Frears expanded this notion to being ‘landscape-mindscape-bodyscape’ (2017).

Touching Sound

Dawn Matheson and Olivia Brouwer

Partnering with the Canadian National Instate for the Blind and supported by the Ontario Arts Council, Touching Sound is a sensory-led nature walk and workshop that was available for individuals with sight loss. Social practice and sound artist, Dawn Matheson, along with Olivia Brouwer, a partially-blind artist, led the work. The workshop involved the creation of sound-activated mixed media sculptures based on recordings and sensory activities while walking in nature at the Guelph Arboretum. Mobiles created from the workshop were also temporarily exhibited at the Guelph Civic Museum from July-August 2023. A second workshop will be held in Waterloo, Ontario on Saturday, May 25th, 2024 from 1-3pm at the Walter Bean Grand River Trail and Waterloo Public Library Eastside Branch. The exhibition will be held at The Button Factory from June to July 2024.
